The 6 piece band will celebrate their 2020 album DEBUT with a special live series playing the album in full + release 2 reworks of the crowd favourite (KANGA)ROO-PAULZ DRAG RACE

2020 has been a weird ride. When I (Mark Neal) released this album I really didn’t expect anyone to care much. When it came to my own songwriting and band (odlaw) I had almost totally given up on it. But there was some weird little part of me that just wanted an excuse to write songs and I was emotionally prepared to cling onto any validation I could get.

Turns out people that I know, that I love, and that I respect would end up really liking this record. Probably partly because it was more selfish and more me than I had ever been before, but definitely mostly because it was fun and carefree while still being pretty raw and honest. Actually you probably can’t be carefree without being raw and honest.

Anyways.. The album dropped, people said nice things, RTRFM featured it, Bandcamp wrote nice words, people I never met before bought it and said nice things, so I put together a band and we said yes to some amazing shows. RTRFM let us play their spring party, Pat Chow invited us onto their launch, we got to share the stage with Sly Withers post lockdown, and I have an urge to celebrate the album a couple more times before the year is out.

On Friday December 11 and Saturday December 12 we will present the album live with special guests in Albany and Fremantle. Playing it in full from start to finish, and to sweeten the deal I have 2 reworks of the tune (KANGA)ROO-PAULZ DRAG RACE dropping on Friday November 13.

Come to a gig. Dance awkwardly. Thnx for caring about my tunes

Firmly establishing themselves as a bright force in indie rock music out on the West Coast, Perth’s Big Orange return with their third release for 2020, ‘I Wanna Know’. Taken from the band’s forthcoming debut album An Ode To Odious, Big Orange’s new single comes packed with strong tempos, instrumentation and heart alike.

Led by vocalist and songwriter Daniel Davis, ‘I Wanna Know’ is delivered with passion and dedication to not just producing catchy hooks and melodies, but landing that alt-rock power punch in the lyrics reminiscent of contemporaries including Something For Kate, Sonic Youth and Cloud Control.

Already a favourite with fans in the live space, ‘I Wanna Know’ has Big Orange operating at their most dynamic – a dynamism that is on show strongly throughout An Ode To Odious. Between Davis, bassist Tom Garvey, drummer Jamie Gallacher and synths/multi-instrumentalist Emma Adams, Big Orange pull together a wide range of influences together with songwriting that is both intensely personal and wide reaching.

‘I Wanna Know’ toes this line of personal and the more existential, as Davis ponders the bigger questions of the universe. “It feels good to be letting this track loose. It’s a song about ruminating on life and death, mostly death; Daniel has an unhealthy fixation with dying. It always goes down well in our live set and it’s great fun to play.” Big Orange

2020 has been a busy year for Big Orange, despite the band being unable to tour outside of WA. The band has released two singles already in ‘Apocketlipstick’ and ‘The Reason’, both further demonstrating the band’s collective strength as musicians. Having supported the likes of Jack Ladder and Jebediah in recent years, Big Orange have been cultivating a strong following for themselves out West. And looking forward to 2021 with the release of Ode To Odious, Big Orange are aiming to take their music further around the country as soon as they’re able.

Shut Up Cain is a spiritual reckoning. It’s the sound of a man once lost in hopelessness and nihilism finally finding the pathway out. These are songs of real joy, tinted with that peculiar dark edge that the real world always has. It’s seriously life affirming but it’s not lame. SUC doesn’t find it’s joy in the denial of suffering. It finds it in truth, in all its terrifying, beautiful glory.

“This album perfectly captured what was a serious personality upheaval for me. I had to completely abandon everything that I believed, I had to burn off an entire psychological infrastructure. What a relief! You can actually hear the stupid suffering being joyously lifted from my shoulders. It’s about accepting the responsibility of being a human wholeheartedly. To tell the truth, to stand up straight and to take one’s moral duties seriously. It’s impossible to describe in words what this experience was like but you’ll feel it when you hear Shut Up Cain. This was me finally understanding that meaninglessness, hopelessness, nihilism – it’s all WRONG. As in factually incorrect. A faulty conclusion. Nothing has been the same since I figured that out.”

— ALYOSHA

Alyosha (aka Michael Strong) is a songwriter, record producer and live sound engineer. He runs at a fever pitch of music production at all times. He is the frontman at The Disappointed who’s debut album Escapism came out in 2019. He is the IDM maestro Young Girl, who’s debut A Marshmallow Called Moon dropped in 2019 (new album coming this year). He is the producer and drummer at Odlaw, who’s new album Debut came out in 2020. He is the soundie at Beaufort St Songwriters Club.

Shut Up Cain doesn’t try to be weird but it is a bit anyway. Idiosyncrasy and genuine personality lift the album above the indie pop rock fray. It’s both ambitious and a little scrappy which is a weirdly compelling combination. You Will Be Enough is the utterly infectious and uplifting new single with early Prince and Paul Simon vibes, delightful harmonies and all the feel goods.

Beloved Perth trio PAT CHOW celebrate their first music release in 2 years. “It Gets Worse” is The first single from their next album. A song that’s reminiscent of their early stylings on “Good Deed” and their debut album “Are you okay?”. With grinding bass lines and full tilt onslaught of fuzz and feedback, “It Gets Worse” lyrically concerns anxiety, dissacotian, and the work it takes to shake that feeling. It’s the first taste of their 3rd album that brings it all full circle for the band. Returning to the original trio with the same songwriting MO that led to their 2 adored albums.

Ben Protasiewicz (guitar, vocals) Jamie Gallagher (Drums) and Andrew ‘Goldy’ Meredith (bass, Vocals) have been playing their brand of indie-punk meets grungey alt-rock with each other for over 6 years. If you asked them how they kept it together over 6 years you wouldn’t get a clear answer. Ben would tell you it’s the music, Jamie would say “fuck. I dunno!”, and Goldy would spout a charming and thoughtful tale of friendship while awkwardly spilling beer on his slacks.

2 full length albums, a stack of Singles, several EPs, US touring, WAM Song of the year awards, numerous supports, a bunch of christmas songs, and a fiercely independent australian music ethos have been some of the contributing factors that made Pat Chow a well respected australian band. But It’s the raw and unflinching songwriting backed with a charismatic live show that makes them an adored band in the WA music community.

Pat Chow are a band that challenge music and pay homage to the scene all in the same breath. Instantly likeable hooks, with moving moments that soak into an audience and only pay off on repeat listens. Fun and ferocious on stage, they can be a perfect mess on stage one moment, violently on the edge of disaster with blistering energy, but somehow still be the best band in town before the breakdown kicks in.

Ben’s lyric writing is eloquent and careful, touching on subjects of love, loss, mental health, and friendship, delivered with this heavy australian drawl that is raw, and real. The honesty cuts through instrumentally as well, with Goldy and Gallagher as the backbone to every curve and bend, amplifying the emotion and perfecting subtlety in the catchy songwriting.

Pat Chow captures the nostalgia of 80s indie, and 90s grunge, mixed with all the best bits of 00s alt-rock, but does it with an effortless honesty that is refreshing and current. Pat Chow just might be one of the most important bands in Perth and the last hope for punk rock in this country.

WA 3 piece Cosy have evolved over 10 years of messy side projects and off-shoot bands. Musical mates Oscar Van Gass (drums), Albert Pritchard (bass), came together around the sounds of songwriter Sam Rocchi (guitar, vocals). The trio have sculpted a delicate balance between drama and love, with their textured songwriting and chaotic live show.

‘Buttons’ is about how love promises much more than it will give you, it’s there to break the fall but will step aside when you need it. Recorded with Mitch McDonald (the Love Junkies) at Blackbird Sound Studios (Spacey Jane, Drapht) this is the latest offering since the single ‘Blue’ at the beginning of 2020 and their EP ‘Borrowed State’ in 2018.

Collectively these talented humans have performed in many WA bands including, Noah Dillon, New Nausea, Shit Narnia, Mung Dahl, The Chlorines, Priscilla, and many more. But in Cosy they shine like the sun in your eyes on a hungover morning, it should hurt but it’s the last taste of a well lived night and you want to cling to that feeling as long as you can.

Raucous and loud music. Rambling and passionate lyrics. They keep things moving between sprawling lyrical passages and straight up rock-dogging band chops.

Should We Make A Baby? is a new wave / bubblegum pop mashup, scrappy around the edges and bursting with energy that spills out over the sides. Alyosha asks the one question everyone asks at some point, and actually comes up with an answer (spoiler alert: It’s a yes!).

It’s all about striving to grow the hell up in a culture of endless adolescence and nihilism. It’s about love, God and the most essential experiences of being a human. It’s so uplifting and life affirming, it doesn’t seem to belong anywhere near 2020 – but that’s exactly why you need to hear it, right now!

Alyosha is a man who wasted his 20s on nihilism, depression and cynicism. Then he woke up past 30, violently threw all of that nonsense on the fire and found a completely new vibe. The upcoming album Shut Up Cain is the ultimate expression of this experience, this blood-letting of bad ideas and philosophies.

Listen to ‘YOU WILL BE ENOUGH’ here

Perth’s life affirming indie pop maestro Alyosha latest single ‘You Will Be Enough’ released into the world today. It’s got those early Prince vibes, delightful harmonies and all the feel goods. Influenced by Jordan Peterson, Carl Jung and CS Lewis, it’s about voluntarily accepting the burdens of Being, giving up all of the resentment and bitterness, bearing the weight of your fair share of the world’s suffering with gratitude and humility. With your eyes up and your back straight you grow strong under the weight of responsibility. More than that, you become ennobled by the process.

YWBE exudes gratitude and warmth. It doesn’t tell you that you’re fine the way you are. It doesn’t tell you that everything is going to be ok. It tells you that there’s something in you that’s capable of dealing with the troubles of living, whatever they’re going to be (and they’re definitely going to be nightmarish) but only if you stand up straight, tell the truth and manifest the best you’ve got.

All of the performance and production is a total one man job, recorded at home in a flurry of joy and inspiration. It’s one of those pop songs that comes out fully formed in a mad rush and you instantly know it’s just gotta be the single.

Odlaw started as a suburban indie rock project with a group of musicians in Perth  Australia. Spearheaded by frontman and songwriter, Mark Neal, the band released an EP, an album, and toured a bunch between 2015 and 2017. After some difficult life things, Mark found himself alone, anxious and struggling with inspiration.

At the start of 2018 when Mark was at his lowest, he confided in friend and musical accomplice Michael Strong. Michael and Mark worked together on various musical projects over the years (most notably they play together in The Disappointed).

What came next was surprising. Old ideas transformed, new music flooded in, and an unorthodox attitude to Odlaw songwriting made everything feel okay again. In the safety of Michael Strong, Mark experimented, tried to be brave, took risks, and had fun.

At the end of it all, when the smog settled on a lifetime of regrets, Odlaw made an album that feels more like them than anything else they’ve done prior. Mildly charming, slightly miserable, full of flaws, optimistic, a bit fucking strange, and mostly enjoyable.
